If nothing else he should have been inducted into the Sidemen category, just on his session work alone, although we all know his solo work more then justifies his nomination. You can do something about it by clicking on the button and signing the petition. It was a rare treat for all in attendance.

Gaylord Herron's "Vagabond"...

The cover of Gaylord Herron's "Vagabond".
Courtesy of TAMA.

Vagabond is near-impossible to find, but occasionally Amazon.com will have a used copy for sale. This critically acclaimed semi-autobiographical collection has photographs of circus people, wrestlers, seedy motels and much more. Many of the photos were taken with Herron's homemade 16" x 20" view camera, with exposure times up to two hours. To quote one reviewer, "The picture editing and layout superbly move together to evoke particular feelings, sensations and ideas. The care that went into producing this volume really shows."

Herron captured scenes of lost Tulsa landmarks and events, as well as some vintage shots from Tulsa's "golden age", when Leon Russell and Dr. Mazeppa Pompazoidi (aka Gailard Sartain) ruled. Most of us didn't realize it at time, but this was a magical time in Tulsa. Where else in the world could you find Clapton, Dylan, and George Harrison hanging out west of NYC? The photo montage of Russell and Sartain alone was worth the price of the book. Herron's grainy b&w portraits of Russell and fellow-Tulsan J.J. Cale graced the cover of Tulsa Magazine during this era as well.

I was lucky enough to take a photography course from Herron at the University of Tulsa in the late seventies. It was amazing to watch him at work in the darkroom, and I can only say I see why Vagabond had such a unique style and feel. It's a true work of art.

From the TAMA Archives: The Bill Davis Interview...

Bill Davis - Tulsa's blue-eyed soul man.
Courtesy of TAMA.

A mainstay of the Tulsa music scene from 1960 until his retirement in 2002, Bill Davis still plays an occasional gig around Tulsa. This singer, songwriter and musician was instrumental in creating what many local musicians call the "Tulsa Sound".

Not many can boast that their band consisted of musicians that at one time had played for Bob Seger, Leon Russell, Gary Lewis, Eric Clapton, Bonnie Raitt, The Tractors, and The Eagles (among others). Davis has opened for such acts as Joe Cocker and Leon Russell, in spite of the fact that outside of Tulsa most music fans have never heard of him.

Clapton and Seger listened to Davis' tapes in their dressing rooms, and Seger even recorded one of Davis' compositions ("She Can't Do Anything Wrong", from "The Fire Inside" album, and co-written with ex-Tractors pianist Walt Richmond). Davis received a Platinum Sales Award for his work on that album.

This interview, originally published in the December, 1990 issue of the now-defunct Tulsa Press, is reprinted here, direct from the bowels of the TAMA archives. Tripplehorn, a mainstay of the Tulsa music scene and a former "Playboy" of the "Gary Lewis & The Playboys" fame, considers himself a better pianist then guitarist: "Once I decided to take up the piano I practiced eight hours a day - everyday." The new CD, which features a brilliant and accessible collection of pop and jazz standards (along with a version of the cowboy standard "Streets of Laredo", is receiving good reviews.

Those of you in the Tulsa-area can catch Tripplehorn around town playing solo piano, or as a guitarist for the blue-eyed soul man Bill Davis. The Lifers, located here, started with a group of Leon Russell fans on the Internet back in late 1998; it's now big enough that the members, who come from all corners of the world, stage their own events. Attendees at private events in Louisville, KY and Muskogee, OK were surprised when Russell showed up unexpectedly to thank them. More recently the group has taken to hiring Russell to play at a private event hosted annually in Muskogee, Oklahoma.

Chances are that if you attend any of Russell's many annual concert appearances, you'll run into a group of these hardcore fans. As one Lifer stated, "We're like the Grateful Dead's "Deadheads", except we're smarter and better looking!"

Here's the link if you want to join or learn more about this unique group of Russell fans.

Speaking of Rockin' John Henry...

Rockin' John Henry (1944 - 2004)

There was a tribute to Rockin' John Henry on April 17th at Tulsa's legendary Cain's Ballroom. A review of the festivities can be read at rockinjohnhenry.com . The fruit of this tribute will be an annual college scholarship for a deserving broadcasting student, and a permanent home for John's massive record collection. TAMA wishes John's family and sponsors all the best with this project.

For those of you not familiar with Rockin' John, he was Tulsa's answer to Wolfman Jack, only John was better and knew more about the history of rock music then any other living soul. He was one of the last people to actually play vinyl records in the studio, and was also a genuinely nice guy. A true Southern gentleman. He was taken from us suddenly on August 10, 2004. See more on John in our Tributes page @ TAMA's home website.

Welcome...

Welcome to the Tulsa Area Music Archives (TAMA) blog.
